Über Daniel Kiskery

I have developed a certain passion for digital technologies around 5−6 years ago. During my studies in design at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest (MOME), I have gained experience in designing and producing contemporary jewelry and costumes. In the second year of my Bachelor I realized that using 3D printing or laser cutting to fabricate such design objects makes me even more excited and engaged during the creation process. Although I still enjoyed the analoge fabrication techniques, I started to dive into technologies, such as 3D modelling and 3D printing.

I acquired most of my 3D-related knowledge at different online courses and some at the university, but most of the time I practised on my own. I have learned different 3D design computer programmes such as Rhino 5, 3ds Max and Maya. In addition to 3D related software, I have experience with Adobe programs, since occasionally I undertake graphic jobs, and I also know Corel, because I use laser cutting fairly often in my daily work. I enjoy teaching myself different design softwares and techniques and I am open to learn and master new ones.

In 2015, MOME started a partnership with FabLab Budapest. Fablab Budapest is an open innovation center for everybody who is willing to learn. Like all Fablabs around the globe the basic principle is to teach and share ideas and knowledge to anybody who comes in. To deepen my knowledge in digital fabrication technologies I volunteered for the position to keep contact between FabLab and MOME, and started to work as a student consultant. My job was to help the designer and artist students with implementing their projects and realising their ideas. That was a great opportunity to gain hands on experience with machines, which otherwise would not have been available to me. I learned 3d printing, laser cutting and cnc milling at Fablab Budapest from a team of supporting engineers. I also have technical knowledge in the use of 3D printers and laser cutters so I can maintain then and occasionally repair them.

I am still working at Fablab Budapest as a creative technologist. Now, I have 3 years experience in 3D printing with FDM SLA and SLS printers. In addition, I have been operating laser cutters and CNC mills for the last 3 years and have experimented with programming robotic arms and Arduinos.

I have been involved in 3D design for the last 5 years including my personal, as well as customer projects. Usually, I use Rhino 3d during my work as a designer, but I also like parametric modeling, for which I use Grasshopper. In my own projects I design parametric fashion pieces such as jewelry and costumes that I 3d print. I have a collection of jewelry pieces called Lacunae which I designed with this technology, that can be 3D printed at shapeways.

I also enjoy working on wearable technologies, building prototype electronic pieces. One of my ongoing projects is a Printed Parametric Collar, called ‘Hexubi’, which I like to categorize as a “wearable sculpture”.
I built several prototypes of jewelry, costumes and household design pieces even designed and built several large scale installations. My last project was a smart home item in collaboration with a company. They were responsible for the technical part of the project.

Furthermore, I have plenty of hands on experience in the implementation of analogue projects. During my twenties I worked on large scale projects at summer festivals where I built stages and large scale installations such as a 7 meter tall head for SUN festival at Hungary.
This also demonstrates, that I can work under stress and uncomfortable conditions.

I have gained experience in metalworking, woodworking, welding and all the handheld machines and with materials such as different kinds of wood, brass, plexiglass etc. while working on these projects and at Fablab Budapest. I even had vocational training at a design school before MOME where my major was sculpting and jewelry design, which was based mostly on analogue techniques.

Although I enjoy working in a team, I can handle myself well alone and independently as well. I am an organised and cool headed thinker, who is comfortable with resolving problems that might come up during work and able to avert bigger roadblocks at projects. I can lead a team effectively and more importantly I would really like to be part of the maker community, where sharing knowledge and discussing ideas is the essential part of the culture.

Also I helped different students coming from different areas with their design and art projects at Fablab Budapest with consulting, teaching them different programmes and methods, and showing them the use of machines. Fortunately, I am a very patient person, which I find a useful characteristic when it comes to teaching. I think I am also pretty friendly and helpful with the students of MOME and the customers of FabLab. I enjoy working together with people who share my passion for making things and it always makes me feel good, when I see that someone is happy because I helped their projects to come alive.
