Gastroscopy, also known as esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD, is a medical procedure that allows a doctor to examine the inside of the esophagus, stomach, and the upper part of the small intestine (duodenum). It is typically performed by a gastroenterologist, a doctor who specialized in diagnosing and treating conditions of the digestive system. If you are experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss, it may be worth discussing the possibility of a gastroscopy with your doctor. During the procedure, the doctor will use a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope, which has a light and a camera on the end, to view the inside of the digestive tract. The endoscope is inserted through the mouth and passed down the esophagus, through the stomach, and into the duodenum. Gastroscopy is usually done as an outpatient procedure and is performed under conscious sedation to ensure your comfort. It is an important tool for diagnosing and treating conditions such as stomach ulcers, acid reflux, and swallowing problems. If you are considering a gastroscopy or have questions about the procedure, don’t hesitate to contact us to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced gastroenterologists. We are here to help you take control of your digestive health.
